Collection: Samuel Johnson

Samuel Johnson (1709–1784) was one of the most influential literary figures of the 18th century — a writer, lexicographer, critic, and moralist whose influence on English letters is profound and enduring. Best known for his monumental Dictionary of the English Language (1755), Johnson also published essays, biographies, poetry, and philosophical reflections that shaped the intellectual life of his time and continue to resonate today.

His other major works include The Lives of the English Poets, The Rambler, and the philosophical tale Rasselas, each marked by Johnson’s clarity of thought, moral seriousness, and distinctive prose style. Johnson’s influence extended well beyond his writing; as the subject of James Boswell’s landmark biography, The Life of Samuel Johnson, he became a defining figure in literary culture — known as much for his conversation and character as for his published work.

Johnson’s writing reflects a deep concern with moral and spiritual life, the challenges of human frailty, and the enduring value of language and reason. He is widely admired for the depth of his intellect, his distinctive literary voice, and the lasting impact he had on English criticism, biography, and prose.
