Collection: Stephan Zweig

Stefan Zweig (1881–1942) was an Austrian writer, playwright, poet, and biographer of Jewish descent. He was born in Vienna into a wealthy industrialist family, which allowed him a broad education and extensive travel throughout Europe. His work, which included short stories, essays, and biographies, was characterized by psychological insight and an elegant style.

Zweig gained international fame for works such as Amok , The Star Collection of Humanity , Impatience of the Heart , and biographies of Marie Antoinette and Fyodor Dostoyevsky. He was also a pacifist and a supporter of European unity, which was reflected in his essays.

After the Nazis came to power, he left Austria and his books were placed on the list of banned works. He eventually settled in Brazil, where in 1942, feeling the loss of his Europe, he committed suicide with his wife Lotte Altmann.
