Jan Kochanowski (born ca. 1530 in Sycyna, died 22 August 1584 in Lublin) – Polish Renaissance poet, translator, provost of the Poznań cathedral chapter in 1564–1574, court poet of Stefan Batory in 1579, royal secretary and military of Sandomierz in 1579–1584. He is considered one of the most outstanding Renaissance artists in Europe and the poet who contributed most to the development of the Polish literary language.
