On September 15, 1712, Pierre Simon Fournier was born, one of the most outstanding French typographers of the 18th century. His influence on the development of European printing is hard to overestimate. In 1764, his "magnum opus" Manual Typographique was published (printed by Jean Joseph Barbou). Fournier, describing printing in Europe, did not spare Poland criticism: short, accurate and, in its own way, unfortunately relevant to this day.
Printing is not respected in this country. The scale of use which exists there does not require many foundries, so there is only one in Warsaw. ( Manuel Typographique , 1764, vol. 2, p. xliv.).
