A Philosophical Inquiry into the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and Beautiful (Polish edition: Philosophical Investigations on the Origin of Our Ideas of the Sublime and the Beautiful (1968) is a treatise written by Edmund Burke and first published in 1757. Some historians assume that the first version was written by Burke when he was only 19, while studying in Dublin. "He wrote the work in a clear language, devoid of the rhetorical turns and metaphorical ornaments that he used in his political speeches, but not devoid of pathos - especially in the chapters on the sublime. The treatise was not written for polemic purposes, but for the purpose of seeking and possibly finding the truth. At least that is what the author assured," wrote Stefan Morawski.
The treatise was received favourably by the public of the time and quickly received both a review and a second (revised) edition in 1759. However, over time Burke lost interest in aesthetics, so that when thirty years later he was offered a re-edition of the book, he simply refused.
Nevertheless, the book turned out to be one of the most important British works on aesthetics published in the 18th century, inspiring Diderot and Kant, among others. It finally gained a permanent place in the history of European philosophy of beauty.
