The landing of the British in Portugal in 1808 and the beginning of a long campaign on the Pyrenean Peninsula marked the beginning of the end of Napoleon's empire. Although it seemed that after the Peace of Tilsit all of Europe was in Napoleon's power, without complete control of Spain and Portugal the French emperor could not dream of complete peace. For the British, on the other hand, this war concerned vital issues: control of the Mediterranean and Portugal, thanks to which English goods reached the European markets under the continental blockade. The French beyond the Pyrenees meant a real threat to London's interests.

That is why it is worth reaching for Westmoreland 's Memoir of the Early Campaigns of the Duke of Wellington in Portugal and Spain . These are the memoirs of an officer, admittedly still of average rank, but due to family connections (the Duke of Wellington was his wife's uncle), close to British decision-makers, both political and military. This is an eloquently written account of an eyewitness to this campaign, extremely difficult and fought with variable fortune.
