Aleksander Fredro is widely known as a comedy writer. Meanwhile, he was also a master of memoirs, written in the style of old Polish tales. And he had a lot to remember, since he served in Napoleon's army from 1809 to 1814. The pinnacle of his military career was the position of an orderly officer in the staff of Napoleon himself. For whom, by the way, he had no excessive sentiment. His humorous memoirs "Three by Three" remain a delightful read to this day.
