The Castle of the Koniecpolskis by Anna Olimpia Mostowska was first published in 1806 in the Vilnius printing house of Józef Zawadzki. Together with Strach w Zameczeku, it is one of the first Polish "Gothic novels", a genre that was extremely fashionable at the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Suffice it to mention Horace Walpole's Castle of Otranto (also published by Rambler). Reading Mostowska's novels, it is clear that she was very familiar with the Western European classics of horror literature at the time. She was a woman who found her place in the environment of European writers and intellectuals. Her second husband (the formal divorce took place in 1804), Tadeusz Mostowski, was not only one of the most interesting Polish politicians of the post-partition period, but also a man of great merit for culture. One of the most interesting publishing houses of the time operated in his Warsaw palace.
