Collection: Sophocles

Sophocles (c. 496–406 BC) was one of the most outstanding playwrights of ancient Greece, along with Aeschylus and Euripides. His plays are characterized by masterful dramatic construction, psychological depth of characters, and reflection on human fate and destiny. Sophocles introduced innovations to Greek theatre, such as increasing the number of actors to three and developing the role of the chorus.

Only seven of his tragedies have survived to this day, out of about 120 plays he wrote. The most famous of these are Antigone , Oedipus Rex , Oedipus at Colonus , Electra , Ajax , Trachinki , and Philoctetes . His plays had a huge influence on European literature and philosophy, inspiring Renaissance, Romantic, and modern writers, among others.

The works of Sophocles have been translated into Polish many times. The first translations appeared in the 19th century, and in the 20th century the most popular translations were those by Kazimierz Morawski, Jan Kasprowicz and Jerzy Łanowski. Modern editions of Sophocles' tragedies available in Poland include both classical translations and new interpretations, often accompanied by extensive literary and historical commentaries.

Sophocles' dramas can be found in various editions - from popular classic literature series to exclusive bibliophile editions. Many of them are published in prestigious series such as the National Library , BN Polskiego Wydawnictwa Naukowe (PWN) or Wydawnictwa Ossolineum . Thanks to this, modern readers can rediscover the timeless works of this great Greek tragedian.
